ESPY's 2008

Countdown to Beijing!

I've been imagining myself standing on the Great Wall of China for the last couple of months. I have been beyond excited ever since I found out I was going to Beijing to cover the Olympics for Access Hollywood.

I am a real "newbie." I have never been to Asia nor, have I ever been to the Olympics so, I feel really lucky to be able to have this assignment.

There has been so much to do to get ready for this trip. August in Beijing is super hot and humid so we had to keep this in mind when my stylist and I were preparing our wardrobe. Nicole and I had a two hour fitting, deciding which outfits would be the most comfortable while I am reporting from the Great Wall and the Olympic venues.
We actually had to ship the clothes last week from LA so they would get there in time for our arrival the first week of August. Finding a hair salon in Beijing that does my type of hair would be like finding a needle in a haystack so, I made sure they shipped a hard bonnet hair dryer, along with an electric converter for all my flat irons.

There are no particular immunizations that are required for entry into China; however, the U.S. Disease Control and Prevention authorities recommend that we have updated Polio and Tetanus immunizations. So, I stopped by an immunization office to check my records and yes, I am all good. I'm always one to be prepared so whenever I travel, I take a variety of medications with me - juuusst in case. The doctor suggested that I take a supply of antibiotics, an anti-diarrhea medication, and an asthma inhaler. Smog is a major problem in Beijing.

The U.S. Olympic team has even distributed a new mask, developed as a secret project, to its 600 athletes. With the games less than three weeks away, Beijing has begun restricting car use and limiting factory emissions in a drastic effort to clear its smoggy skies. So, right before I left the office, the nurse handed me five surgical masks telling me to pack them in my carry-on and pull one out when I land.

The last thing I want to have happen on my exciting trip to Asia is to get sick because my body isn't used to my new surroundings. So, after departing the doctor's office, I headed to the gym.
More later as we countdown to Beijing!

Peace,
Shaun
